The black 5.25″ Removable SATA Hard Drive/Mobile Rack Drawer from StarTech is a hot-swap solution that allows you to quickly swap SATA hard drives in/out of a computer, without having to open the computer case. The mobile rack is fully compatible with RAID installations to ensure maximum performance and versatility, for enhanced storage applications. It features a front panel ball-bearing fan with aluminum construction and 25,000+ insertion rating. To maximize the performance and utilize the full speed potential of your SATA III hard drives, the HDD backplane supports SATA III for transfer speeds up to 6 Gb/s, when paired with a compatible controller.
Simply install the drive bay into a 5.25″ bay on the host computer, and mount a 3.5″ SATA HDD into the (removable) caddy. Connecting the SATA hard drive to the computer is as easy as inserting the caddy into the drive bay, which can be locked to prevent unauthorized removal of the drive.

I have used six of these DRW150SATBK devices for many years, 24x7x365. I use five of them to support standalone or RAID HDD data applications, and one of them to support an SSD. The SSD required a 2.5″ to 3.5″ adapter so it would mount in the drawer. In all the years I have used them I have only had to replace a fan in one of the drawers. Otherwise they have been flawless. It is a reliable, solid and well-built product. I highly recommend this product if there is a need to easily remove SATA HDDs or SSDs from a computer.

There is nothing wrong with the product itself- it works great and I like the design of the caddy. The problem with this thing is that you can’t buy additional caddies, you have to buy an entire unit (more than the cost of your average hard drive!) I wish I had realized this before purchasing, as I would not have bought it. I don’t much see the point in a hot swap bay with one drive. Isn’t the whole point to be able to swap it? But if I want to swap a different drive, I have to take the caddy apart and install the other drive. Entirely defeats the purpose of the whole thing. Can’t recommend unless you don’t mind to pay full price for each additional caddy and have a bunch of extra bays in your closet.

Got two of these to replace an older caddy and I am a little disappointed. My old caddy would take 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives as the drawer part had its own connectors. I found this useful if one wanted to format a HD or do a data recovery it took seconds to insert the drive in the drawer part and insert it in the PC, the new caddy you have to screw the HD in as the HD connectors are what connects to the case unit in the PC (and only good for 3.5inch HD unless you mess about with a bracket). Shame I opened them both and removed the cellophane wrapping as I do not think I need a second one now! That said, it is well made and very sturdy and the data transfer rate is vastly faster then the old caddy unit.
