The major advantage of the OWC Mercury Pro in comparison to most other external enclosures for internal optical drives consists in the fact that it supports firmware flashing. This makes it possible to down- or upgrade the firmware on the drive, should that need arise. Just make sure that the optical drive you intend to insert into the enclosure is not too long. It is recommendable to download the user manual before buying it, to see if it fits your drive. A note to international buyers: not only the shipping fees are more than twice as high here as when buying from that place in the South American rainforest near a river of the same name, but the second charge that the courier service will make you pay at the door is also going to be more than double the actual amount for import tariffs and taxes, due to messenger services’ practices and the additional fees they charge for their ‘service’ that serves them, not you.

I have 2 blu ray drives from different pc’s. My kids new pc’s do not have 5.25 bays. When I went to put my asus drive inside it is about 1/2 inch too long. I did manage to fit my lg inside but I had to pull out the grommets to screw it in place. Now I can move it around to the other pc’s as needed.

New cases no longer gave spots for optical drives so I purchased this for a blu ray drive I have. I was surprised my asus drive was too long and would not fit. I also had an LG drive so I swapped the two. To fit my LG drive I had to removed the black rubber grommets to get the screw holes to align correctly. It seems the manufacturer could easily fix this compatibility issue increasing the size by just an inch. I have it working though so I am good.

Beware! Standard burners do not fit this enclosure. (I bought it for a UHD Pioneer burner) The depth is actually limited to 72mm, a specification that is nowhere to be found on the website or the box itself, this limitation is actually specified on the inside flyer that you get after opening the box. There’s no instruction on this useless flyer and the A/C comes with just one US A/C adaptor. (HDD usually come with at least EU & UK too) Very cheap and poorly designed product. Just look elsewhere. I wished I could return it.

I knew my Blu-Ray drive was about a half inch too long when I bought this enclosure so there is no issue that I didn’t know what I was getting into. I’m simply echoing other reviewers in wondering why it wasn’t made an inch deeper. My drive went in far enough that it protrudes about 3/8 out the front, which is not a problem at all, but it would look more tidy if it actually fit flat in front. If they made it an inch longer it would probably be a much better seller.

This is a well built, solid enclosure that works well. IMO, it’s a bit on the pricey side for what it is. Asus BW-161DHT fits in just right, but a longer optical drive may not. Assembly instructions were missing, but it’s easy to figure out how to assemble this.

I got it to preserve the use of a 5.25 drive in a new PC case with no optical drive slot. (The drive has old firmware, that allows playing of UHD BluRay disks.) I found the USB cable that came with it to be a bit short (24, 60cm). If you get a replacement, be sure to get the high bandwidth A/B type.

I have two of them made into an external optical drive for two computers.
