This is a perfectly capable trackball, except for the missing ability to scroll. There are utilities that work for Windows, and probably the Mac, but Linux users have such things built into the OS. By default, left and right buttons combine to make a middle click. The left and right, small buttons make a back and forward combination for working with the browser. I wasn’t happy with that. I made sure as a Debian Linux user that I had libevdev2 and xserver-xorg-input-evdev installed. Then as root, or via sudo, create the following file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-logitech-trackman.conf, and put the following in it: # InputClass configuration for Logitech USB trackball # Section InputClass Identifier TrackmanConfiguration MatchProduct Logitech USB Trackball Driver evdev Option ButtonMapping 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 8 Option EmulateWheel true Option EmulateWheelButton 8 EndSection Restart your xserver (log out and log back in). It does the following: Left and right clicks are unchanged. Left, small button is the middle click. Left, small and move the ball is vertical scroll. Right, small button is the browser back button. Note that there are nine buttons involved that can be swapped around on the ButtonMapping line, but when it comes to assigning the scroll button you use the original values. Finally, lefties might want to use button 9, rather than 8. They also might want to swap buttons 1 and 3 (default left and right buttons).

I bought this to edit a large project with my laptop. Since I was used to using a similar model in the past, it’s really made the edit go smooth.

This trackball takes up little space on my desk, and has great ergonomics. Cursor movement and buttons have a solid feel. I don’t mind that it is wired, as it is used with my desktop PC. The only thing is missing as a scroll wheel. Otherwise it is perfect.

I have been using these things for maybe 20 years or more. I keep coming back.

Needed a portable small mouse for laptop editing out in the field. This perfect for cramped tight work spaces like the back seat of my SUV. I do not need any flat surface to glide a mouse…. I just use this.
