Description
The DRW-24F1ST 24x Internal SATA Multi DVD Writer from ASUS is a Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP compatible optical drive that supports a broad range of 8 and 12cm media, including DVD±R (SL/DL), DVD±RW, DVD-ROM (SL/DL), DVD-RAM, CD-R, CD-RW, and CD-ROM. It features a maximum DVD write speed of 24x, a maximum DVD read speed of 16x, and a maximum CD write speed of 48x. It also supports DVD playback at 6x and Audio CD and VCD playback at 16x. This drive mounts within your system’s 5.25″ drive bay using a SATA connection with access times of 130 ms for DVDs and 170 ms for CDs. The DRW-24F1ST also utilizes E-Green technology which auto-closes the drive application when it is not in use to reduce power consumption. Additionally, Disc Encryption II software helps increase security with password controls and hidden-file functionality.

I purchased this as a plug and play replacement for an old internal DVD drive that stopped working. What I received from B&H was not a full retail item. It was basically just the drive and a set-up DVD in a plain box. No cables, mounting pieces, or manual was provided. This was not a problem for me, but be aware. As for the set-up DVD, there was some trial software and (theoretically) a firmware update. I passed on the trial software. The CD’s firmware update simply took me to a dead AUSA web link. I looked up the firmware on the ASUS website and it is some program intended to make the drive work in a more green manner. The downloaded .rar file was not recognized by Windows, so I just decided to pass on it. I haven’t had a chance to use this drive much yet, but it seems to be working as expected.

I just bought a WIN 10 install and guess what – it came on a disc. If you don’t have a reader, what are you going to do? Nice unit, works well, as expected. Quiet and quick too.
